Reviewer: J. Thomas Pierce, MB.BS, PhD (Navy Environmental Health Center)
Description: This is a five part practical workbook addressing worksite health promotion in terms of foundations, operations, strategies, reengineering, and challenges.
Purpose: This is a technical manual and is intended to be used as a practical means of planning, executing, and evaluating worksite health promotion programs. To the extent it is adopted, this is an important goal.
Audience: The book can be used by both students and employed professionals engaged in health promotion. It would appear to me to be a valuable common reference for teams of human resources and associated personnel beginning such a project. The editor is a respected professor and an expert on worksite health promotion.
Features: By design this book is easy-to-read and is a conversation starter in virtually any human resources or healthcare environment. The authors admit that a lot of its health promotion information is available through diverse sources but argue this book puts the data in context. I would agree.
Assessment: There are arguably dozens of good health promotion references that span the scientific and popular literature. Given the backing of the American College of Sports Medicine and the diverse backgrounds of over 30 contributors, I believe this book offers something important. Academics will find the corporate name-dropping about successful health promotion programs annoying, while others may see this as a practical strength. The authors have been generous in providing checklist and focused interview forms in the appendix. My single and minor criticism of the book is that while the Web site information is current, the references are slightly dated.
